Transforming Retail through Data-Driven Insights

In the ever-evolving landscape of retail, the power of data is revolutionizing how businesses operate, make decisions, and shape their futures. At blithequark, we're at the forefront of this transformation, leveraging vast amounts of data to drive innovation, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. As a Senior Data Engineer - Data Ventures, you will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, and maintaining the data pipelines that underpin our data-driven strategies, working closely with Data Scientists, Analysts, and business stakeholders to tackle complex challenges and unlock new opportunities.

About the Role

As a Senior Data Engineer within the Data Ventures team at blithequark, you will be responsible for contributing to the development of an integration layer of complex data transformations, refining raw data into targeted, meaningful data assets. Your work will enable our Data Scientists and Analysts to derive actionable insights, driving business growth and enhancing customer experiences. This role is a perfect blend of technical challenge and business impact, offering the opportunity to work on cutting-edge data engineering projects that are reshaping the retail industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Strategy: Understand, articulate, and apply principles of the defined strategy to routine business problems involving a single function, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Data Transformation and Integration: Extract data from identified databases, create data pipelines, and transform data into a structure relevant to the problem by selecting appropriate techniques, staying abreast of current research trends.
  • Data Source Identification: Support understanding the priority order of requirements and service-level agreements, identify the most appropriate source for data suitable for purpose, and perform initial data quality checks on extracted data.
  • Data Modeling: Analyze complex data elements, systems, data flows, dependencies, and relationships to contribute to conceptual, physical, and logical data models, defining relational tables, primary and foreign keys, and stored procedures.
  • Code Development and Testing: Write code to develop the required solution and application features, create test cases to review and validate the proposed solution design, and test the code using the appropriate testing approach.
  • Problem Reporting: Translate business problems into data-related or mathematical solutions, identify appropriate methodologies (e.g., analytics, big data analytics, automation) to solve the problem, and share use cases and provide examples.
  • Applied Business Acumen: Provide recommendations to business stakeholders to resolve complex business problems, develop business cases for projects with an extended return on investment or cost savings, and translate business requirements into tasks and activities.
  • Data Governance: Establish, modify, and document data governance practices and recommendations, implement data governance practices in collaboration with business stakeholders and peers, and educate others on data governance processes and policies.

What You'll Bring

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, complemented by strong technical skills and experience.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Flash Scala, SQL, and experience with Hadoop and Cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with Python/PySpark, Java, and backend technologies like J2EE is a plus.
  • A proven track record of coding with at least one programming language (e.g., Scala, Python) and experience with distributed computing platforms (e.g., GCP, Azure).
  • Skills in data modeling and data migration protocols, with experience in GCP, data warehousing, and coordination tools like Automic and Windstream.
  • A passion for code quality, system reliability, and performance, with a demonstrated history of delivering high-quality solutions.
