Weston is seeking and Associate Scientist 2 to perform technical tasks supporting cultural resources and archaeological projects, including conducting field investigations, recording site data, and assisting in the preparation of accurate, clear, and relevant technical reports. This role is responsible for developing a working knowledge of archaeological field methods, regulatory compliance processes, and documentation standards. The Associate Scientist II applies established methods, procedures, and techniques to support project execution while meeting schedule and quality expectations. Location: Remote (Spartanburg, SC region) Expected Outcomes: Perform field assignments including archaeological surveys, site identification, and documentation tasks associated with assigned projects. Under supervision, make appropriate judgments regarding field methods, including site recording techniques, transect spacing, and recording of cultural resources. Utilize appropriate field techniques to ensure accurate and defensible data collection. Conduct field investigations such as Phase I cultural resource surveys, monitoring during construction, and site assessments in support of environmental and infrastructure projects. Record detailed field notes, photographs, GPS data, and site forms in accordance with regulatory and company standards. Process and organize field data, artifacts (if applicable), and documentation to ensure proper identification, cataloging, and reporting. Coordinate with project teams to ensure accurate data integration into project deliverables. Perform background research including reviewing historical records, maps, and previous cultural resource studies to support field investigations and reporting. Assess and correlate archival information with field data collected. Compile information prescribed by the scope of work and present it in a logical, accurate, thorough, and understandable manner. Prepare clear and concise cultural resource reports, including field summaries, site descriptions, tables, figures, and maps. Collaborate with archaeologists, scientists, and project team members to complete projects efficiently and accurately. Provide input on field methods, documentation quality, and process improvements. Assist the project management team in tracking field progress, schedules, and project budgets. Interact with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders in a professional manner, responding to questions and escalating issues to senior team members when appropriate. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field and 2–4 years of relevant experience. Experience performing archaeological fieldwork, including pedestrian surveys, site recording, and monitoring. Knowledge of cultural resource management (CRM) practices and applicable federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., Section 106). Ability to accurately record field data and maintain detailed documentation. Ability to analyze, interpret, and present field and research data. Ability to meet time-sensitive deadlines and manage multiple priorities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software; familiarity with GPS units, GIS, or related tools is a plus. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work effectively both independently in the field and as part of a team. Complies with Weston Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) policies and site-specific safety plans. Responsible for personal EHS compliance and actively engages co-workers in safety practices. May assist with field safety oversight. Membership in professional organizations (e.g., SAA, RPA) is encouraged. Ability to work in outdoor environments, including remote locations, active construction sites, and varying weather conditions. Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain, dig shovel tests, and perform physically demanding fieldwork. Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds. Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time. Ability to receive and convey detailed information through written and oral communication. Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced work environment.
