Senior Underwriting Consultant - Life Underwriting - Remote
Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our Life Underwriting Department as a Senior Life Underwriting Consultant for our Large Case and High-Net-Worth Foreign National Team. This role offers the opportunity to work on sophisticated cases, including high-net-worth and international business, while contributing to a collaborative culture that values learning, partnership, and continuous improvement. What you will do
- Deliver Thoughtful Underwriting Decisions
- Review individual life insurance applications with a focus on high-net-worth and foreign national clients
- Assess medical and non-medical risk in alignment with company guidelines, with the goal of delivering the best possible offer upfront
- Partner with Medical Directors, Underwriting Leadership, and peers to navigate complex or unique cases
- Apply your authority responsibly while ensuring appropriate collaboration on higher-limit cases
- Meet service expectations while maintaining quality and consistency
- Build Trusted Relationships
- Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and respectfully with internal partners and distribution teams
- Foster strong relationships that support long-term growth and mutual success
- Share your knowledge through agent and partner education, including leading seminars on underwriting topics
- Represent Symetra with professionalism in both virtual and in-person settings; occasional travel may be required
- Support and Develop Others
- Serve as a resource and mentor for fellow underwriters, offering guidance on complex or high-visibility cases
- Contribute to a culture of learning by supporting training, coaching, and knowledge sharing
- Lead educational sessions for agents, BGAs, and underwriting colleagues
- Contribute to Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to enhance underwriting processes and the customer experience
- Participate in team, department, and company initiatives that drive innovation and effectiveness
- Engage with industry events and stay current on trends to help strengthen our underwriting practices

Compensation
Salary Range: $106,400 - $177,300 plus eligibility for annual bonus program Who You Are
- At least 10-15 years of cumulative, relevant experience
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage large caseloads and provide quick turnaround times while maintaining Symetra's mortality standards
- Strong technical and financial underwriting skills
- Service-oriented with commitment to meet deadlines, prioritize and handle multiple tasks in a demanding work environment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Mastery of underwriting principals, practices, insurance medicine, financial underwriting, field operations, product offerings and life insurance contract law.
- Ability to travel and make presentations to clients and producers.
- Strong negotiation skills.
- CLU, FALU and/or FLMI, or working towards completion of designation is preferred.
- College degree preferred, high school diploma required.
Travel: Required Training & Professional Development All newly hired people leaders with direct reports are required to complete a comprehensive leadership development program within their first year. This program includes both virtual and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place at Symetra's corporate headquarters in Bellevue, Washington.
