Director of Engineering $110/hr (Remote, 10–20h/wk, Opportunity for Full-Time)

We specialize in building custom web applications and integrations with speed and quality, using Next.js + TypeScript + TailwindCSS + Prisma/MongoDB in the hands of the best engineers in the world. Our clients include startups, and Fortune 500 companies, who trust us to ship great production-ready software fast. With templated foundations, and AI-enhanced development, we deliver software that is beautiful, scalable, and reliable. We’re now hiring a director of engineering to join us as a client-facing technical leader. This is a remote freelance role (10–20h/week to start) with the opportunity to grow into a full-time position. What You’ll Do at Jaro.dev
- Client communication: Lead technical discussions with clients over Slack and calls, making complex ideas simple and building trust.
- Architecture & planning: Transform client requirements into technical plans and architectures that our engineers can execute.
- Team leadership: Supervise, mentor, and train senior engineers, raising the technical bar across projects.
- Code oversight: Review PRs and ensure quality standards; occasionally dive into Next.js code to unblock the team.
- AI-driven efficiency: Apply prompt engineering and AI tooling to accelerate delivery and eliminate repetitive work. (We use AI extensively)
- Multi-project management: Balance timelines, priorities, and client expectations across several concurrent projects.
- Work directly with our CEO to improve processes and results for clients.
Requirements
- Native-level English with excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Strong technical background in Next.js, React, TypeScript, and SaaS architectures.
- Proven experience leading and mentoring engineering teams.
- Client-facing confidence — can communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Passion for AI tools and prompt engineering.
- Must work hours overlapping Pacific through Eastern US time zones. Client calls will be between 10am to 6pm Eastern Time.
- Available for 10–20h/week to start, with flexibility to scale to full-time (30–40h/week) as demand grows.
Nice-to-Haves
- Prior experience at a software agency or consultancy.
- Knowledge of Vercel, GCP, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps.
- Entrepreneurial mindset and adaptability in high-growth environments.
