Genetic Clinical Counselor I (Part-Time) - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Scheduled Hours 20 Position Summary Participates with a clinical geneticist in the delivery of genetic services.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Elicits individual and family histories and information regarding the psychological and socioeconomic status of the family. Reviews with the family and clinical geneticist the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planned. Transmits pertinent information about genetic risks and mechanism. Assists the family in assimilating the genetic information and adjusting to its implications. Implements the treatment plan and makes appropriate referrals to medical, nursing, social work and psychological services. Provides follow-up support to patients and their families. Summarizes findings for patients and referring physicians. Participates in the education of parents, community groups, physicians, medical professionals, agencies, staff and students regarding human genetics. Facilitates provision of services, including intake and clinic organization. Assists in the development and implementation of ongoing clinical investigations in genetics. Working Conditions: Job Location/Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Physical Effort: Typically sitting at desk or table. Repetitive wrist, hand or finger movement. Required Qualifications

Education: Master's degree Certifications/Professional Licenses: The list below may include all acceptable certifications, professional licenses and issuers. More than one credential, certification or professional license may be required depending on the role. Basic Life Support - American Heart Association, Basic Life Support - American Red Cross, Certified Genetic Counselor - American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC), Certified Genetic Counselor - American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMG) Work Experience: No specific work experience is required for this position. Skills: Not Applicable Driver's License: A driver's license is not required for this position. More About This Job Required Qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited genetic counseling program. Must be board certified in genetic counseling by the either the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or eligible to obtain certification within a year of graduation. Basic Life Support certification (Online Basic Life Support certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the Basic Life Support requirements). Preferred Qualifications: Competent in interviewing and counseling techniques to elicit from patients or family the information necessary to reach appropriate conclusion. Knowledge of genetic and mathematics principles to understand the limitations, interpretations and significance of specialized laboratory and genetic procedures. Ability to anticipate areas of difficulty and conflict, to help families and individuals recognize and cope with their emotional and psychological needs and to recognize situations requiring referral and to transmit pertinent information effectively.

Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
