Climate Catastrophe Science Intern – Summer 2026

Overview

  • *Position Summary:**

We are seeking curious, passionate, and hard-working students from quantitative academic fields to participate in our fully remote summer internship program. The program will be highly collaborative and immersive, with interns working on real business problems that can span multiple business units within the complex insurance landscape. But it won’t be all work! Mercury executives will host virtual lunch-and-learns with a small group of interns to discuss career aspirations, interns will get to meet Mercury people leaders and team members throughout the organization, and there will be a multitude of virtual social events.

Responsibilities

  • *Essential Job Functions:**

Under immediate supervision, the Climate & Catastrophe Science Intern will work alongside professionals and mentors within the Climate & Catastrophe Science organization to find smart, data driven solutions to complex problems. The intern will support research initiatives and model development for Mercury’s portfolio of risk linked to natural hazards (e.g., wildfire, severe convective storms, hurricanes). Interns work directly with a mentor in their field of study, collaborate with stakeholders across Product, R&D, Pricing, Underwriting and Reinsurance, and gain exposure to team meetings and project discussions to help contextualize their work.

  • Utilizes analytical tools (e.g., Python, R, SQL, SAS or equivalent) to extract, prepare, and analyze structured and unstructured data in support of climate and catastrophe risk research.
  • Assists with exploratory and predictive modeling projects (e.g., hazard, exposure, vulnerability, mitigation) under supervision; helps evaluate model performance, segmentation, and loss impacts.
  • Performs targeted literature and data research on external sources (e.g., academic studies, industry consortia, public datasets) and summarizes findings relevant to Mercury’s climate and catastrophe modeling roadmap.
  • Helps connect external research and datasets to Mercury’s internal modeling framework by documenting data structures, use cases, and potential integration opportunities.
  • Prepares clear reports, visualizations, and presentations to communicate methods, findings, and recommendations to technical and non technical stakeholders.

Over the course of the summer, the intern will contribute to a minimum viable product (MVP)—such as a prototype analysis, tool, dataset, or research framework—and will have a capstone opportunity to present their work to the Mercury leadership team. Other functions may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • *Education:**

• Be legally eligible to work in the U.S

  • Currently pursuing a BS/BA/MS in a quantitative field (Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering, Actuarial Science, Environmental Science, Economics/Finance).
  • Able to provide current GPA, as reported by your school. Minimum 3.0 GPA required, 3.5 or higher preferred.
  • Ability to work 40 hours a week, 12-week internship, that aligns with Mercury’s internship program.
  • Enrolled student attending a university program with an expected graduation date that falls within Mercury’s expected hiring window.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA required, 3.5 or higher GPA preferred.

Enrolled student attending a university program with an expected graduation date on or after August 2025 Planning to seek full-time employment between December 2026 and September 2027

  • *Experience:
  • Solid track record of academic excellence
  • Strong commitment to teamwork, learning and collaboration.
  • Academic or project experience in data manipulation and analysis using tools such as Python, R, SQL, SAS or equivalent
  • Familiarity with modeling concepts such as GLMs, logistic regression, and gradient boosting algorithms
  • Insurance coursework/projects; exposure to pricing/research workflows
  • *Knowledge and Skills:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Ability to manipulate and analyze data to address and solve business problems
  • Willingness to independently learn and make an impact within a team environment
  • Working knowledge of SQL and one language (Python or R); clear communication
  • SAS familiarity, dashboarding tools (Power BI/Tableau), basic model validation techniques
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
