About Us

The Department of Agriculture is partnering with several provincial departments in the Truro/Bible Hill area for summer student positions for Black Youth. We offer exciting career paths, opportunities for advancement, mentorship, training, and professional development in a safe and healthy work environment. What you will do: You will work as part of a team of professionals to help provide services to Nova Scotians. You will explore and learn about the Department you are working in, which could include serving the public, interacting with industry members, research activities, coordination of meetings or events. You may also have the opportunity learn about the other departments in the Civil Service. You will participate in agricultural learning opportunities, visit local farms, and see hands-on food production and processing. You will also have the opportunity to visit universities and food labs, where you will learn more about the science behind agriculture. Additional Information: Remote/In-person: These positions are typically In-Person. Additions: This competition is restricted to Youth that are African Nova Scotian or of African Descent in Grades 11, 12 or enrolled in post secondary studies for September 2026 Students are asked to identify their preferred positions based on the positions listed. Contact Info: Natasha Gray (902) 399-5731 (talk & text) or [email protected] Examples of Positions Available: 1.Department of Agriculture - Business Risk Management: This student will support BRM program improvements by analyzing survey and administrative data to develop evidence-based performance reporting, outcomes measures, and insights for decision-making and new program development. 2. Department of Agriculture - Programs: This student will support the Programs Division in reviewing and processing applications, file management, and program promotion. This work involves reviewing applications and program claims for completeness along with entering application data into the online Grants Management System. 3. Department of Agriculture - Crown Lending Agencies: This position requires a strong communicator with excellent time management and interpersonal skills, experience in financial analysis and have a good working knowledge with spreadsheets and databases. Responsibilities include providing management with assessments of loan requests, interpreting financial statements and conducting due diligence searches. 4. Labour, Skills and Immigration - Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency: This position requires a motivated post-secondary student to support NSAA policy work through equity and apprenticeship research while gaining hands-on experience across operations, strategic initiatives, and data-related functions. 5. Office of African Nova Scotian Affairs (ANSA): You will work with the ANSA Regional Program Administration Officer to support the development and implementation of programs and initiatives aimed at strengthening and empowering African Nova Scotian communities in the Northern region. 6. Department of Public Works - Finance: This position is seeking a clerical student with an interest in finance and some previous accounting-related experience or education to assist the accounting team in their district office. Duties will include data entry, filing, and other office-related tasks as needed. 7. Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Land Inventory (ALI): This summer student supports ALI through spatial data preparation, imagery interpretation, land-use classification, and field verification. The position combines office and field work, using GIS and mapping tools to improve understanding and protection of agricultural land in Nova Scotia. A valid driver's licence is required.
