Video Game Concept Artist [Character, Creature & Environmental Design]
We’re seeking a versatile, high-level Concept Artist specializing in character and creature design, with additional strengths in environmental worldbuilding. You will play a critical role in defining the visual identity of our AAA MMORPG, working directly with the Creative Director and Narrative Team to bring this ambitious world to life. You’ll be responsible for translating detailed narrative briefs, lore documents, and mood boards into grounded, realistic designs—whether for grotesque planar entities, grounded medieval-fantasy factions, or dynamic urban post-Convergence environments. Your work must evoke a world where even the most fantastical elements feel like they could physically exist. As a founding team member, your compensation will be based on equity and/or a percentage of ICO funds, disbursed within 48 hours of the project's funding. This model ensures alignment with the project’s success, offering significant potential rewards tied directly to its achievements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop compelling, grounded concept art for characters, creatures, factions, and regions, tailored to a world influenced by eldritch horror, post-collapse sci-fi, and ancient myth
- Translate detailed written briefs, scripts, and mood boards into visually rich concepts with strong storytelling intent
- Create stylized realism that bridges anime aesthetics, biomechanical horror, and cinematic believability
- Produce visual development assets across multiple factions, planar entities, post-convergence zones, and forgotten civilizations
- Collaborate with the Art Director, Narrative Director, and worldbuilding team to ensure visual designs serve narrative goals and lore
- Provide turnarounds, callouts, silhouettes, and layered explorations to support production teams
- Work with 3D artists, lighting teams, and level designers to ensure your designs translate cleanly to in-game environments and mechanics
- (Optional but valued) Use 3D tools (e.g., ZBrush, Blender) to block out or photobash complex scenes
- Maintain strong iteration cycles, embracing feedback and revisions from leads and peers
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience:
- 5+ years of professional experience as a concept artist in games, film, or immersive media
- Portfolio must show expertise in stylized realism, with examples of grounded, high-fidelity creature/character/environment design
- Deep understanding of anatomy, lighting, materials, architecture, and visual storytelling
- Proven ability to collaborate with screenwriters and narrative designers to visualize layered characters, locations, and symbolic elements
- Comfort working across styles: dark fantasy, cyberpunk dystopia, and myth-influenced anime aesthetics
- Highly proficient with Photoshop, Procreate, or equivalent 2D tools
- Familiar with photobashing, lighting studies, and using 3D model overlays for grounded realism
- Strong communication and organizational skills in remote collaborative environments
Preferred Skills:
- Experience developing for Unreal Engine 5, especially in concept-to-asset pipelines
- Familiarity with ZBrush, Blender, Maya, or Substance Painter for shape language exploration or presentation polish
- Understanding of real-time lighting, PBR material logic, and how concept art supports world and gameplay immersion
- Knowledge of game development pipelines for MMORPGs, cinematic storytelling, or open-world systems
