Madrid Playbook Senior Reporter
Job Description
POLITICO is looking for a hungry, politics-obsessed reporter to launch Madrid Playbook. We provide non-partisan, distinctive journalism for politics and policy obsessives across North America and Europe. Now we want to extend our coverage into Spain — and into Spanish — by producing a daily newsletter focused on what is driving the day in Spanish politics. This senior reporting role will be an authority on what is happening behind the scenes, helping our readers, who have a professional stake in politics, get ahead of what to expect each morning. The role would suit a scoop-hungry, energetic journalist with deep knowledge of Spanish politics. This reporter will need to be able to speak to all sides across the political divide in order to be trusted by readers to offer a fair, authoritative and fun perspective on who and what is driving decision-making. As one of our first hires in Spain, this person will act as a figurehead for the publication, putting us on the map in Spain. Who You Are
- You're a politics obsessive with a demonstrable interest in politics and policy, most importantly in Spain
- You have confident news judgment and a track record working independently
- You are comfortable working flexibly, particularly a late schedule and Sundays, in order to produce the strongest possible morning newsletter
- You have a strong desire to produce deeply reported, non-partisan journalism for insiders
- You are a clear, quick writer with a light tone to make the newsletter fun to read first thing in the morning
- You have an excellent command of Spanish and the ability to connect well with English-speaking colleagues
- You have a strong desire to be part of a team, both as we build POLITICO in Spain and by connecting well with colleagues elsewhere
What You’ll Do
- You'll lead reporting and writing to produce Madrid Playbook ahead of each weekday morning
- You'll use news judgment, fact-checking and writing skills to gather and synthesize information across all areas of Spanish politics and policy
- You'll develop scoops and original story ideas
- You'll continuously develop deep sourcing and demonstrate the excellent judgment needed to launch this product and POLITICO into the Spanish market
