Accounting Analyst

Nelnet Business Services (NBS) is a division of Nelnet, Inc. that provides innovative payment technology and education services. The Accounting Analyst role combines transactional accounting with analytical responsibilities, supporting financial processes and ensuring data integrity while collaborating with various departments to enhance business performance.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and post journal entries, ensuring accuracy, proper documentation, and compliance with GAAP
• Perform reconciliations of key balance sheet accounts such as deferred revenue, accruals, and prepaid expenses
• Support the month-end and quarter-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting
• Analyze variances in revenue and expenses and communicate findings to Accounting and FP&A teams
• Assist in execution and testing of internal controls to ensure SOX or audit compliance as required
• Provide audit support through documentation gathering, reconciliations, and responding to external auditor inquiries
• Support the build and maintenance of financial reports, schedules, and analysis tools to improve visibility
• Work with ERP systems (e.g., Workday) and data tools (e.g., Snowflake, Power BI) to extract and validate financial data
• Identify and support process improvements that increase efficiency and accuracy across accounting workflows

Skills

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
• Proficiency in journal entry preparation, reconciliations, and financial close activities
• Working knowledge of GAAP and internal controls
• Advanced Excel skills, including power query for analysis
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts clearly
• Analytical Thinking: Interprets financial data to support variance analysis, reconciliations, and decision-making
• Attention to Detail: Maintains high levels of accuracy and thorough documentation across all accounting processes
• Accountability & Execution: Follows through on commitments and delivers accurate work within deadlines
• Business Acumen: Understands how transactional accounting connects to overall financial performance
• Communication: Clearly conveys financial insights to accounting and non-accounting audiences
• Problem Solving: Proactively identifies issues, investigates root causes, and recommends corrective actions
• Collaboration: Partners effectively with cross-functional teams including FP&A, Operations, and Audit
• Exposure to financial data platforms and reporting tools like Power BI or Snowflake is a plus
