Senior SEO Consultant (Shopify): Site Cleanup, Redirect Strategy & Indexation Control
We are an established Shopify ecommerce brand with strong authority and backlinks from major publications (New York Times, CNN, Vogue, Motherly). Over time, our site has accumulated:
- 126+ collections
- Hundreds of blog posts (many already noindexed)
- Redirect chains, 404s, and legacy URLs
- A mix of organic, paid, and press-driven traffic We are looking for a senior SEO consultant to strategically reduce index bloat, fix redirects and errors, preserve link equity, and create a clean keyword-to-page map — without harming rankings, paid traffic, or authority. This is not a junior task or a mass-deletion project. ⸻ Scope of Work (High Level) 1. Collection & Blog Audit
- Audit all collections and blog posts
- Identify pages to keep, merge, noindex, or remove
- Resolve keyword cannibalization
- Reduce overall index bloat intentionally 2. Redirects, 404s & Internal Link Cleanup (Critical)
- Audit existing 404 errors
- Implement 301 redirects where appropriate
- Handle complex scenarios, including:
- Pages being deleted that already have URLs redirecting to them
- Redirect chains that must be simplified
- Live pages internally linking to deleted URLs
- Ensure internal links are updated, not just redirected We expect the consultant to understand:
- When to redirect vs update internal links
- How to avoid redirect chains and loops
- How to preserve link equity during consolidation. 3. Backlink & Authority Preservation Identify URLs with:
- Strong backlinks
- Press mentions Ensure all removals or merges:
- Preserve SEO value
- Redirect to intent-matched destinations
- Do not break press-linked URLs 4. Robots.txt & Indexation Strategy (Shopify)
- Review current robots.txt
- Evaluate:
- Crawl blocking vs noindex usage
- What is submitted vs indexed in GSC
- Recommend a clear, intentional indexation strategy. 5. Keyword Research & Mapping
- Perform keyword research for remaining pages
- Assign one primary keyword per page
- Create a keyword-to-URL map
- Identify optimization priorities 6. Paid Traffic Safeguards
- Review URLs used for paid media
- Ensure no paid landing pages are removed or altered without approval Required Experience
- 5+ years SEO experience
- Shopify SEO experience (required)
- Large-scale content pruning & redirects
- Ecommerce SEO & site architecture
- Tools: GSC, GA4, Ahrefs/SEMrush, Screaming Frog (or equivalent) Not a fit for juniors, content writers, or anyone proposing mass deletions without a redirect plan. Deliverables
