Key Responsibilities

As a Teaching Assistant MEC, you will play a critical role in supporting students with diverse needs. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting Student Learning: Provide instructional services to students under the general supervision of a licensed or certified teacher, including implementing specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with emotional and learning disabilities.
  • Creating a Safe and Inclusive Environment: Assist in maintaining a safe, orderly, and respectful environment that is conducive to teaching and learning, and promote equity and culturally responsive practices to create inclusive environments.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with colleagues and assist teachers to meet student learning needs, and communicate regularly and effectively with stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and other support staff.
  • Daily Living Skills: Assist students with daily living skills, such as dressing, toileting, and feeding, as applicable.
  • Record Keeping: Assist with maintaining accurate and up-to-date records, including attendance, progress monitoring, and other student data.
  • Professional Development: Attend staff meetings and trainings, and participate in ongoing professional development to enhance your skills and knowledge.

Requirements and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

Essential Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in education, special education, or related field preferred.
  • Certification: Valid New York State Teaching Assistant certification (MEC) required.
  • Experience: Previous experience working with students with diverse needs, including autism, emotional, and developmental disabilities, preferred.
  • Skills: Ability to work with a diverse population of students, support students to ensure a safe and orderly environment, and implement specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Diverse Populations: Experience working with students with autism, emotional, and developmental disabilities, and/or experience with behavioral interventions and supports.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with students, teachers, and other support staff.
  • Flexibility: Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing needs and priorities.
