About the Role

As an ELA Teacher with Asheville City Schools, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the minds of our students, guiding them to become proficient readers, writers, and communicators. You will be responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering high-quality instruction that meets the diverse needs of our students, while also fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Management of Instructional Time: Ensure that materials, supplies, and equipment are readily available for each lesson, and that students are engaged and on-task throughout the instructional period.
  • Management of Student Behavior: Establish and maintain a positive and respectful classroom environment, using proactive strategies to prevent misbehavior and promote student engagement.
  • Instructional Presentation: Deliver clear, concise, and engaging instruction that aligns with curriculum goals and objectives, using a range of teaching strategies and technologies to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: Regularly assess student progress, using a range of formative and summative assessments to inform instruction and adjust teaching strategies as needed.
  • Instructional Feedback: Provide timely and constructive feedback to students, using a range of strategies to promote student growth and understanding.
  • Facilitating Instruction: Develop and implement instructional plans that are aligned with curriculum goals and objectives, and that incorporate a range of teaching strategies and resources to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment: Foster positive relationships with students, colleagues, parents, and the broader community, promoting a culture of respect, empathy, and inclusivity.

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A valid North Carolina teaching license
  • A bachelor's degree from a 4-year accredited college or university, or alternative qualifications approved by the State Board of Education
  • Strong knowledge of ELA curriculum and instructional strategies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, and parents from diverse backgrounds
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development and growth

Preferred Qualifications

While not essential, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Experience teaching ELA in a middle or high school setting
  • Knowledge of technology integration and digital literacy
  • Experience with project-based learning and inquiry-based instruction
  • A master's degree or higher in ELA or a related field
